Building My Own DIY Guitar Amp Isolation Cabinet

Updated: May 10, 2021

I spent my time last week working on a guitar amp isolation cabinet for my home studio. Very glad that I did! It was a fun project and it really works great.

The design was based on Mike Ralph's DIY Iso Box. My attempt is a little less perfect looking, but the result is a perfectly functioning cabinet.

The box is made of MDF (medium density fiberboard). The inside is lined with eggshell-style foam pads. I used weather stripping between the box and lid to give it more of an air-tight seal and to prevent crushing cables. The one addition I made to Mike's design was adding handles, since I will likely need to move this box in and out of the studio from time to time.

I tested it out over the weekend with my Marshall JCM 800 and was able to crank the amp and still talk over it! Look out for some demos in the near future.
